Common Pickleball Injuries and Why They Occur

Pickleball involves quick lateral movements, repetitive swinging, and sudden stops, all of which place stress on joints and muscles. Here are the injuries we see most often and why they happen:

  • Shoulder Injuries: Overhead serves and smashes can strain the rotator cuff and shoulder muscles, causing pain and inflammation.
  • Elbow Pain (Tennis Elbow): Repeated paddling motions can irritate tendons around the elbow, leading to lateral epicondylitis.
  • Knee Problems: Rapid direction changes and sudden stops may cause ligament sprains or meniscus irritation.
  • Ankle Sprains: Quick pivots and lateral moves increase the risk of rolling or twisting an ankle.

Many players underestimate the physical demands of pickleball, leading to overuse injuries or strains from poor mechanics. A comprehensive approach to prevention can reduce these risks.

How Physical Therapy Helps Prevent Pickleball Injuries

Our physical therapists focus on strengthening, flexibility, and movement quality to protect your body from injury. We use several proven strategies to keep you moving well on the court:

  • Therapeutic Exercises: Customized programs target muscles around vulnerable joints like shoulders, elbows, knees, and ankles. Strengthening these areas improves stability and endurance.
  • Manual Therapy: Hands-on techniques help improve joint mobility and reduce muscle tension, preparing your body for the dynamic nature of pickleball.
  • Dry Needling: This technique releases muscle knots and reduces pain, promoting faster recovery and better muscle function.
  • Kinesiology & Sports Taping: Proper taping supports injured or weak areas during play, enhancing proprioception and preventing further damage.

By addressing weaknesses and imbalances, our team helps you move more efficiently and confidently, reducing injury risk.

Recognizing Early Signs and When to Seek Help

Ignoring minor aches can lead to more serious problems that sideline your game. Be alert to these warning signs:

Persistent joint pain or swelling Sharp or shooting sensations during movement.

Decreased range of motion or strength Instability or frequent giving way of a joint.

If you notice any of these symptoms, early intervention is key. Our physical therapists will perform a thorough assessment and recommend a treatment plan that may include manual therapy, dry needling, or targeted exercises.

Tips for Safe Pickleball Play and Injury Prevention
